Hydroquinone has been known as an active ingredient in whitening
cosmetics preparations. Six (6) whitening night cream samples has taken
randomly from a supermarket in Purwokerto. Hydroquinone in whitening night
cream samples were identified by thin layer chromatography (TLC) with methanol
: chloroform (1:1) as mobile phase and silica gel F254 as stationary phase.
Determination of hydroquinone levels use Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis)
spectrophotometry with addition phloroglucinol reagents. The results of the
validation of analytical methods including precision, linearity, limit of detection,
limit of quantitation, and accuracy showed that the UV-Vis spectrophotometric
method can be used to determination of hydroquinone level. The six samples
whitening night cream is known that five samples contain hydroquinone with
varying levels.
