The study was aimed to improve students‟ speaking ability through picture
series. The method was Classroom Action Research ( CAR ) which was held at
eight B students of SMP Muhammadiyah Pangkah in academic year 2012 / 2013.
The numbers of students was 22. This study was done on 13 February 2013 - 2
March 2013 in cooperation with the English teacher of SMP Muhammadiyah
Pangkah.
The CAR was carried out based on Kemmis and Mc.Taggart design. There
were two cycles with two actions in each cycle consisting ofplanning, acting,
observing, evaluating and reflecting. The data were collected using test,
questionnaire, observation, and interview.
The result of the research proved that picture series could improve
students‟ speaking ability. The test result showed that 77.27% of students gained
score ≥ 7 and reached the KKM (70%). The average of the students‟ observation
result in speaking class showed that 76.52% of the students were involved in
teaching learning process. The data from the students‟ questionnaire which was
obtained from the ten questions showed that the students gave positive response
about the use of picture series media. The average of students‟ questionnaire
result was 82.73%. The interview result showed that all of the students felt happy
and enjoyed when they were doing speaking activities by using picture series
media in speaking class. Those data proved that picture series media could
improve students‟ speaking ability.
