Abstract

This study aim to know the effect of cooperative learning to speaking competence at
the second year students of SMP N 2 Baturaden in academic year 2015/2016. It was
quasi-experimental, which used nonequivalent control group design. The population
of this research was the second year students of SMP N 2 Baturaden. The samples of
this research were the students of class VIII D and VIII E as experimental class and
class VIII F and VIII G as control class. The technique of data collection used pretest
and post-test. The result showed that the mean score of pre-test in experimental
class was 46.9 and the mean score of post-test was 70.1. Meanwhile, then mean score
of pre-test in control class was 33.8 and the mean score of post-test was 49.6. There
was a deviation from pre-test and post-test as many as 23.2 in the experimental class,
which control class’ deviation was 15.8. The data was calculated by using statical
formula. Based on t-test result, t-test was higher than t table or 3.524 ≥ 1.659, so that
the hypothesis was accepted. It proves that cooperative learning gave possitive effect
for teaching speaking.
