Abstract

A textbook is one of the material references of the English reading teaching at Junior High School. The English teacher has responsibility to select textbooks which used as a material in teaching learning process because not all of English textbooks present good reading materials. A good textbook should be relevant and support the implementation of the curriculum. The purposes of this research are to describe on how reading section is presented in textbook and to know whether “Let’s Talk” textbooks are compatible with English syllabus or not. This research used a descriptive method. The subjects of this research were the textbooks entitled “Let’s Talk” English for Junior High School grades VII, VIII and IX. This research used two main instruments to collect the data: documentation and checklist evaluation criteria based on the English syllabus. After analyzing the content of the reading presentation of the books, the next step was concluding the result of the analysis of the description of reading presentation and percentage form to know how reading skill presented and the appropriate or inappropriate of the textbooks. The result showed that the textbooks presentation on reading consisted of instructions, pre-questions, graphics, generic structures points, texts, pictures, comprehension questions, explanations and tasks. Besides that, the textbooks were considered relevant to the English syllabus of Junior High School which got 100% appropriateness between the content of reading presentation of the books and English syllabus. It could be said that the “Let’s Talk” English textbooks for Junior High School was appropriate.
