The objective of this research was to know the students’ perception of reading
materials used in Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto.
This was a descriptive survey research. The population of this research was
the fifth semester English Department students at Muhammadiyah University of
Purwokerto in academic year of 2012/2013. The samples were 39 students. The
subjects of the research were class B and D of fifth semester students of English
Department at Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto. The writer collected the
data through questionnaire.
The main result of this research was students’ perception toward the
statements in the questionnaire that was classified into two categories. The first
category was students’ perception towards the text. The students 87.18% agreed that
the materials were interesting, 71.79% agreed that the material contained useful
vocabulary, 92.31% agreed of contain correct structures, 56.41% agree about the
length of the materials for one meeting was suitable, and 76.93% agreed of the
material was useful for the students’ future profession. Meanwhile, the second
category was students’ opinion about the aspect that they need as reading materials in
general. 82.05% of students agreed that the materials should be various, 86.18%
students agreed that the materials should be up to date, 79.48% agreed to provide one
page length of article as reading material in one meeting, 89.74% agreed that lyrics of
songs and short stories become the materials in reading class, 87.18% agreed that
poem can also be used as reading material, 51.28% agreed that they had one text in
one meeting, 53.84% of the students agreed that the materials were the lecturer-made
