Abstract

The aim of this research was to know whether the use of the scrambled
words to build students’ vocabulary at the first grade students of SMP
Muhammadiyah Sumbang in the academic years 2011/2012 is effective or not.
The method that was used in this research was experiment. The samples of
this research were 36 students from class VII A as the experimental class and 36
students from class VII C as the control class. The experiment class was taught by
using scrambled words and the control class was not. In collecting the data, the
writer used test and questionnaire. The writer used pre-test to know students’
vocabulary before treatment and post-test to know students’ vocabulary after
treatment, while questioner was used to get students response and opinion about
the Scrambled Words. The writer used t-test as a technique of analyzing the data.
Based on the data analysis, it was found that t-test score was 5.117 while ttable
score at significant level α=0.05 for df 70 was 1.667, so, t-test was higher
than t-table (5.117>1.667), furthermore the result of the questionnaire was showed
that 89, 35% students answer “yes”, it means that the students gave positive
response and opinion. It can be concluded that Scrambled Words is effective to
build students vocabulary.
