Abstract

Vocational school students are expected to be capable of doing understandable conversation which is supported by good grammar mastery. However, grammar mastery is still a problem since vocational school students are not able to use such particular part of grammar namely tenses eventhough they are in the form of simple tenses such as simple present tense, simple past tense, and simple future tense. The problem is caused by perception that tenses are difficult and boring materials. Therefore, index card match is interesting and helpful technique which is proposed to overcome the problem. The aim of the research is to prove whether index card match is able to improve students’ grammar mastery or not. The results of the research prove that index card match is an appropriate technique to improve students’ grammar mastery. The results of the test indicated improvement 5.3% in post-test I and 40.9% in post-test II. Moreover, index card match improved students’ activeness which indicated 53.2% of total improvement. Furthermore, teacher’s performance improved which indicated 13.3% improvement. Additionally, the results of questionnaire which represented whole students’ perception indicated 98.5% of students agreed with the six statements about the usefulness of index card match. The results of the research imply the success of index card match in improving students’ grammar mastery
