Abstract

Objective: To determine the antibacterial activity of water extract or ethanol extract of leaves of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) on the growth of bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli and also knowing Thin Layer Chromatography Profile Water and Ethanol extract of leaves of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.).
Methods: Antibacterial activity test by using disc paper diffusion agar method, the media used was nutrient agar and a positive control streptomycin.
Results: The result of antibacterial activity by using water extract with concentration extracts of 250 mg/ml, 500mg/ml, and 750 mg/ml hasn’t made an against diameter to Bacillus subtilisand Escherichia coli, but if we using ethanol extract with concentration extract of 250mg/ml, 500mg/ml and 750 mg/ml against Bacillus subtilisand Escherichia coli with average diameter of the inhibitory bacteria Bacillus substilis are 12.88 ; 14.50 ; 15.73 mm and 20.37 mm in the positive control (streptomycin).While the bacterium Escherichia coli is 15.32 ; 20.90 ; 25.95 and 27.42 mm in the positive control (streptomycin). Result diameter of the inhibitory showed significant differences to each concentration of ethanol extract. Result of Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) proved that mangosteen leaves contain group of antibacterial substance such as flavonoid, tanin and saponin.
Conclusion: Leaf water extract of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) could not inhibit the growth of bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli. Ethanol extract of leaves of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) can inhibit the growth of bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli.
