Abstract

Learning autonomy is regarded as the goal of today’s language education because English language learning is a life -long learning process in which students should have the ability to continue learning after leaving school. The present study was aimed to find out autonomous English learning activities performed by EFL students and the extent of the performance . A total of 155 state senior high schools students in Banyumas in the academic year of 2015/2016 participate in the study . A questionnaire was distribute to the students to find out their performance of autonomous language learning activities. To get deep er information, a semi -structured interview was conducted to 10 representative students. The result revealed autonomous language learning activities perfo rmed by the students . These activities were related with awareness of language learning process, self -effort in learning English , broader autonomous activities b eyond the class, self -reflection on learning process , the use of reference materials, self - motivation in learning English and the use of computer technology in learning English . Lastly, the extent of the performance was found unsatisfactory. The result indicated that students still rarely performed those autonomous language learning activities .
