Abstract
The aims of this study are to analyze the errors of the students in translating phrasal verbs into Indonesian. The method used in this study is descriptive method. The research was carried out at Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto, on May18 th, 2015. The population of the study is the fourth year students of English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto. There are 35 students used as sample. Random sampling by lottery is used to get the sample. To get the data from the sample, the writer administered a translation test. The total number of items is 25. This study focuses in translating the English Phrasal verbs. From the computation the total possibility of making error is 875. In this research, there are 341 (38, 97) errors made by the students. Those are classified into two types. They are overgeneralization 146 (42, 81 %) of the total number of errors, and false concept hypothesized 195 (57, 19 %). In other hand, phrasal verb is classified into three types. They are verb + preposition, verb + adverb, verb + adverb + preposition. The computation of errors based on the type of phrasal verb are verb + adverb 149 (43, 69%), verb + adverb + preposition 116 (34, 02%), and verb + preposition 76 (22, 29%). Because the total errors are 341 (38, 97%), the correct answers are 534 (60, 03%). Referring Suharsimi’s opinion it is classified as fair. Although the translation categorized good, but the students should practice more in translation so that they can improve their translation quality.
