Abstract

Introduction: Antibiotics are organic compounds produced by various species of
microorganisms which at low or high concentrations can kill or inhibit other
bacteria. The children or babies are more susceptible to various infections,
especially on respiratory system. Respiratory infection is a disease caused by
bacteria and viruses, such as Streptococus Pneumonia, Mycoplasma Pneumonia
and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Based on data obtained from Cirebon Public
Health Center in 2012, respiratory infection have been second ranks of the top
ten disease in Public Health Center. High frequency of inappropriate use of
antibiotic can result in bacteria resistances. Bacteria resistance might increase the
treatments cost due to the use of diverse types of antibiotic. Antibiotics provision
is determined by knowledge and compliance in carrying therapeutic regimen.
Object: This study aimed to determine correlation between parents knowledge
and compliance of antibiotics used in pediatric patients with respiratory infections
in Cirebon Public Health Center.
Method: This study was an observational cross sectional research with
descriptive analytical approach.
Result: Based on the research, chi-square analysis show X2 calculated > Xtable
(13, 8 > 3.481), which means there was a significant correlation (p-value < 0,05)
between parents knowledge and complience of antibiotic used with in pediatric
patients with respiratory infections in Cirebon Public Health Center.
Conclusion: Parents with low antibiotics knowledge have 5,3 times possibility of
non-compliance of antibiotic treatments on their children than high knowledge
parents.
