Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a disease characterized by the increase of blood
glucose levels (hyperglycemia). Diabetes mellitus requires long-term and expensive
treatment. Therefore, research on finding new and affordable plant derived subtances to
treat DM is necessary.
Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the hypoglycemic effect of purwoceng
herb ethanol extract (Pimpinella pruatjan Molk) against alloxan-induced rats.
Methods: The type of this study is experimental, randomized pretest and posttest with
control group design.
Result: On Na CMC group the blood glucose level of the rats did not decline and were
significantly different to blood glucose levels of glibenclamide group. Blood glucose
levels of glibenclamide group decreased until reaching the normal value. Blood glucose
levels of 12,5 mg/KgBB purwoceng ethanol exract (EEP) group decreased and were
comparable with blood glucose levels of glibenclamide group. Blood glucose levels of
25 mg/KgBB EEP group decreaced and were also comparable with blood glucose levels
of glibenclamide group. Similarly, blood glucose level of 50 mg/KgBB EEP group
decreased and were comparable with blood glukcose levels of glibenclamide group.
Conclusion: Each dose of purwoceng ethanol extract (Pimpinella pruatjan Molk)
showed the effect on decreasing blood glucose levels of rat (hypoglycemic activity).
