Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out kinds of error made by students in
understanding imperative sentence. The writer chose the topic because imperative
sentence was taught in MTs level. MTs or Madrasah Tsanawiyah, is the Islamic
Junior High School. Related to school curriculum, imperative sentence was used
to understand the English procedur text, one of the genre texts.
The research used descriptive method. In this research, a test was used as
instrument to collect data. This research was conducted at MTs Maarif NU 10
Krenceng. The population was the students of eighth grade in the Academic Year
2013/2014. The population was 150 students. The sample was 20 % out of
population or 30 students.
After the data of test was analyzed, it was concluded that the category of
the students‟ mastery in understanding imperative sentence was fair with
percentage 50 %.The highest score was 67,5 and the lowest one was 32,5. From
the data, it could also be seen the kind and the percentage of error done by the
students. There were 5 kinds of error done by the students. They were
misordering, omission, addition, misformation, and lack of vocabulary. The errors
above were dominated by error in undestanding nominal imperative sentence.
Misorder was 40 %, omission was 32 %, lack vocabulary was 11 %, misformation
was 10 % and addition 7 %.
