Abstract

The aim of this study is (1) to know the influence of Cooperative Integrated Reading and
Composition (CIRC) method to reading comprehension ability (2) to know the influence
Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) method to reading comprehension Ability. (3)
To find out more influencing method between cooperative integrated reading and
composition (CIRC) and Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) method to the
ability of reading comprehension of fable text of grade 8 student of MTs Negeri Sumbang.
This study is an Experimental research using pretest- posttest control group design. The
population of the study is all students of grade 8 of MTs Negeri Sumbang in the academic
year of 2016/2017. The number of populations is 154 students comprising 5 classes. The
sample of the study is students of class 8.B and 8.C. The class treated using CIRC method
is 32 students, while the other class treated using STAD is 30 students. The sampling
technique used is cluster random sampling. Data collection uses test instrument. The data
analysis technique uses paired t test and independent t-test. The study shows that the
average score of reading comprehension ability of fable text of the treated class using
CIRC method is 82.50 and the treated class using STAD method is 70,50. Based on the
statistical analysis independent t-test. The value of t-count is 3.952 while the value of ttable
is 2.000 with the significance of 95% (α=0,05. Thus, The value of t-count is higher
than the value of t-table. It means that CIRC method gives more effect to reading
comprehension ability than STAD method to students of grade 8 student of MTs Negeri
Sumbang.
