This research entitled “semantic role of functional sentence on students` descriptive
essay class VIII SMP N 1 Ajibarang years 2012/2013”. The purpose of this research
was to describe the patern of semantic role to the functional sentence in the students`
descriptive essay of class VIII SMP N 1 Ajibarang academic years 2012/2013.
The data source of this research were students` descriptive essay of class VIII SMP N
1 Ajibarang. The source of the data is decided with the purposive sampling technique.
There is 12% form all essays that is 33 essay from each class. There are seven class
for VIII grade started from VIII A to VIII G, each class consist of 33 students. The
data of this research is in the form of verbal sentence with descriptive essay from the
students. The data collection technique is carried out by giving the tasks to the
studenst by asking them to make descriptive essay with free topic. It will make the
students easy to work on it. Then, the researcher with take sample by sampling
technique to select which one is appropriate to analyses. The aspect of analysis is the
semantic role of functioned ssentence on the essay. Then, the sentence which are
analyzed are verbal sentence.
Bassed on this analysis its known that there are 89 kinds of semantic pattern in the
students` essay in the form of sentence. The semantic role of this essay are varied,
such as actor, action, place, experience-condition-tools, deed-equitment-purpose,
time-existence-place, time-actor-deed-equitment, condition-experience, place-deedexperience,
place-existence-experience, purpose-deed-result, sufferer-experiencecondition-
sufferer, method-deed-instrument-time, existence-place, tools-deed-tools,
subject-place-existence, exception-place-existence-actor, connector-time-actor-deedmethod,
conjunction-deed-place, etc. this research proved students could create
semantically role pattern and language variation which made, however the sentence
which taken only verbal sentence.
