Abstract

The aim of the study was to describe how the comprehension-based interactive reading was implemented at SMP in Banyumas Regency. This type of descriptive study included 30English teachers of junior high school in Banyumas Regency as the sample by using purposive sampling, and 116 junior high school students in Banyumas Regencyas supporting data by using random sampling. In collecting the data, the writer used questionnaire. The data were analyzed both through quantitative and qualitative technique. The quantitative technique was used to measure the total frequency of questionnaire answer, and then the qualitative technique was used to describe the result of the questionnaire and analyzethe implementation of comprehension-based interactive reading at SMP in Banyumas Regency. From this study, it was found that the implementation of comprehensionbased interactive reading at SMP in Banyumas Regency was in category “fair”. There were some reading classes which still presented activities which were not interactive and could not develop students’ comprehension.The result showed that reading aloud was still recommended in reading class as a one-sided exercise. The use of dictionary in solving vocabulary problems and translating the text in order to understand the whole meaning of the text wasalso recommended to help students’ comprehension in reading. Moreover, the explanation of text genre became the focus of teaching reading in the class nowas a wayto help students understandabout the text.Besides that, the development of readiness aspect, reading speed, and summary activity had not been implementedtotally since some of reading classes did not regard those things as important activities in teaching and learning reading. However, students had been encouraged to do collaborative learning in reading classes by recommending students to work in pairs or groups to help their comprehension.
