Abstract

This study was aimed to improve students‟ reading comprehension
through PQ4R technique. It used classroom action reseach (CAR), which was
conducted on grade VII B students of SMP N 3 Mrebet in Academic year
2014/2015. The population of the class was 32 students. It was conducted in
collaboration with the English teacher in the class. The CAR was carried out
based on Kemmis and Mc Taggart‟s design. The reseacher took two cycles with 2
actions in each cycle. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing and
reflecting. The data were taken by tests which were analyzed qualitatively, and
observation, and questionnaire were analyzed quantitavely. The result of the study
indicated that there were signifiacant improvements in students‟ reading
comprehension after implementing PQ4R technique in teaching and learning
process. The result of the test showed that the average score were 54.5 in pre –
test, 68.12 in post – test 1, 77.75 in post test 2. The result of the students who get
score more than equal 7.0 was 12.50% , 34.37% in post-test 1 and 87% in posttest
2. From the result of students‟ observation it could be known that in cycle 1
the score of students‟ activity was 60%. In cycle 2 the score of students‟ activity
increased to be 82%. The questionnaire also showed that students had positive
response to the teaching. It was indicated from the average score of questionnaire
was 4.22.
