Abstract

This study attempted to find out the level and causes of students‟
anxiety in English classes at Baturraden Senior High School in the academic
year 2015/2016. Total sample were 125 students from 4 classes (X-3, X-5,
XI IPS 2, and XI IPA 2). A questionnaire was distributed to the students to
find out their perceptions about their anxiety level and causes in English
classes also their strategies to overcome their anxiety. To get deeper
information, an opened-questions was distributed to all students. The result
showed that the students‟ anxiety level in Baturraden Senior High School
was considered severe anxiety or 87.2%, whereas 8.8% and 4% experienced
panic anxiety and modernate anxiety. The highest causes of anxiety is fear
of negative teacher evaluation, and other causes such as lack of vocabulary,
incomprehensible input.The research study also indicated some strategies
used by students to overcome their anxiety in English classes such as
practice to speak in English, enrich new vocabulary, and do exercises.
