Abstract

This research investigates gender stereotypes and the resistance expressed by the characters in the series Anne with an E season 3. Drawing on Linda Brannon’s theory of gender stereotypes specifically the Cult of True Womanhood and Male Sex Role Identity the study explores how the series constructs, reinforces, and challenges traditional gender norms through its characters and narrative. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research analyzes selected scenes and dialogues that illustrate female characters' responses to expectations of piety, submissiveness, domesticity, and purity, as well as how male characters are portrayed through the lenses of strength, aggression, emotional suppression, and dominance. While previous studies on Anne with an E have mostly discussed feminism, character empowerment, or general gender inequality, they have not specifically analyzed gender stereotypes using Brannon’s concepts, nor explained how the characters directly resist these stereotypes. It creates a gap in understanding how the series addresses stereotype-based limitations on both women and men. Filling this gap, the findings show that characters like Anne, Diana, and Miss Stacy challenge female stereotypes through confidence, education, and independence, while Gilbert and Matthew challenge male stereotypes through empathy, openness, and supportive behavior. Overall, the series presents gender stereotypes as something that can be questioned and actively resisted.
