Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of toxic relationships and the coping strategies used by Slim, the main character in the film Enough (2002), in her struggle against toxic relationships. This research applies a qualitative method using Lazarus and Folkman’s coping strategies framework to identify the forms of toxic behavior experienced by Slim and the strategies she employed to confront them. The findings reveal that Slim suffered repeated abuse from her husband, Mitch, which manifested in four forms of toxic relationships: gaslighting, physical abuse and controlling behavior, economic violence, and verbal abuse. These forms of abuse not only caused physical harm but also affected Slim’s psychological well-being and independence. In response, Slim applied various coping strategies to protect herself and her daughter, including seeking social support, finding a safe place to live, self-defense training, and revolving power. The results of this study show that adopting adaptive coping strategies helped Slim regain control over her life and break free from the cycle of violence. This research emphasizes the importance of effective coping in dealing with toxic relationships and can serve as a reference for understanding coping mechanisms in the context of toxic relationship portrayed in popular media.
