Abstract
This research examines the representation of LGBTQ themes in the lyrics of three songs by Lil Nas X—“C7osure,” “Industry Baby,” and “That’s What I Want”— through the application of Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity and Michael Riffaterre’s semiotic theory. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method and a literary approach to identify implicit and explicit meanings related to LGBTQ issues within the selected works. Butler’s framework is used to analyze how the lyrics engage with and respond to societal constructs of gender, while Riffaterre’s theory is applied to interpret the use of signs and symbolic elements that may challenge heteronormative conventions. The findings indicate that the lyrics contain both direct and indirect expressions connected to LGBTQ identity and experience, positioning the songs as cultural texts that reflect contemporary discussions on gender and sexuality.
