Abstract

This study analyzes alternate egos and compares two movies, Peacock (2010) and Jekyll and Hyde (2021), using Janet Pierre's theory and Putnam's theory as supporting theories. It examines alternate egos caused by traumatic events or excessive repression and compares alternate egos categorized as split personalities and public personas. Focusing on the main characters in the movies John Skillpa in Peacock (2010) and Dr. Jekyll in Jekyll and Hyde (2021). The Peacock (2010) movie tells the story of John Skillpa, who lives in a small town called Peacock. John Skillpa has a secret that he conceals, and the secret unravels. Jekyll and Hyde (2021) tell the story of a famous doctor named Dr. Henry Jekyll who is accused of being a serial killer. This study uses qualitative methods and psychological analysis in literature, this study shows that alternate ego can be categorized as new identity and this depends on the purpose and cause of the alternate ego. The findings showed that alter egos are divided into two types: split personality and public persona. These alternate egos have different intentions and intentions toward John Skillpa and Dr. Jekyll. Emma Skillpa alternate ego serves as a coping mechanism. Mr. Hyde alternate ego serves as a release from long-suppressed repression.
