Abstract

The movie Bombshell (2019) portrays the dynamics of power and gender inequality within the media workplace, particularly under the leadership of Roger Ailes at Fox News. This research aims to analyze how power relations in the workplace intersect with patriarchal culture and affect women's work professional experiences. Using Jay Roach's Bombshell as the primary data, this study employs Michel Foucault's theory of power relations and Allan G. Johnson's theory of patriarchy as the theoretical framework. The analysis focuses on manifestations of power trough surveillance, discourse domination, and normalization of objectification. Conducted a qualitative approach with narrative analysis of the movie’s dialogues and scenes, the research finds that power relations reinforced by patriarchal culture create an oppressive work environment for women—characterized by control over their body, silencing of the voices, and psychological pressure. Nevertheless, the movie also portrays act of resistance by female characters highlighting these efforts to challenge unjust power structures.
