Abstract

This study examines the deconstruction of binary oppositions in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023), with a focus on the binary opposition between J. Robert Oppenheimer and the United States military forces. Drawing on Jacques Derrida’s theory of deconstruction, the research investigates how the movie portrays the binary of "scientist vs. state" and how this opposition reveals symbolic power structures. By analyzing selected dialogues from the film script, the study shows that while Oppenheimer is initially framed as a moral and intellectual figure opposing the pragmatic and authoritative state, this opposition is unstable and interdependent. The state's authority relies on scientific legitimacy, while the scientist becomes implicated in state power. Through Derrida’s key concepts such as différance, trace, and the instability of hierarchical binaries, the analysis reveals how the film disrupts fixed meanings and exposes the contradictions within power structures. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how cinema can critique ideological dominance through symbolic and narrative tension.
