Abstract

Anali, Consenda Syabila, 2109010003. 2025: Manifestation Of Repressed Emotions In The Album ‘Dreamscape’: A Freudian Analysis Of Empathy And Support. Undergraduate Thesis for Sarjana Sastra Degree, English Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences and Communication, University of Muhammadiyah Purwokerto.

This research examines how suppressed emotions were expressed in NCT Dream’s Dreamscape album. The research employed Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory to analyze how emotional struggles were conveyed through the psychic structure Id, Ego, and Superego, and how symbolism is utilized to represent hidden feelings related to mental health. The analysis focused on three songs: No Escape, Rains In Heaven, and Heavenly. A qualitative descriptive approach was applied to interpret the lyrics as texts that representing anxiety, repression, inner conflict, and the desire for emotional support. The finding revealed that each song portrayed different stage of psychological tension, No Escape reflects despair and internal chaos, Rains In Heaven emphasizes empathy and healing, and Heavenly symbolizes hope and liberty. These emotional arcs illustrated the complexity of human psyche and underscored the power of music as a medium for emotional expression and recovery. This research suggests that popular music, especially K-pop, could offer valuable insight into the psychological experiences of youth. It also emphasizes the importance of interpreting song lyrics not merely as entertainment but as a reflection of repressed emotions, empathy, and mental health awareness.
