Abstract
Safitri S Fira 2109010027. 2025: Verb Structures and Their Relationship with Grammatical Encoding in Spontaneous Speakers with Broca Aphasia: A Case Study of English and Javanese Speakers. Undergraduate thesis for Sarjana Sastra degree, English Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences and Communication, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto.
This study examines the speech patterns of English and Javanese speakers with Broca's Aphasia, using the Argument Structure Complexity Hypothesis (ASCH) by Van Valin (2001) to explain the complexities of verb structures. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, gathering data from YouTube videos of English speakers and direct observations of Javanese speakers diagnosed with Broca's Aphasia. The data includes transcriptions of spontaneous speech from patients in both languages. The findings show that individuals with Broca's Aphasia, regardless of their language, struggle significantly with producing words and forming coherent sentences. Both groups often use incomplete phrases and rely on key words to express their intended meanings.
