Abstract

DM is a metabolic disease marked by hyperglycemia. Purple sweet potato
contains anthocyanin which has potential to lower blood sugar levels. This study
aims to prove the hypoglycemic activity of the ethanol extract of purple sweet
potato against hyperglycemic mice induced by alloxan. This is an experimental
research with posttest only control group design. This study uses 20 male mice
devided into 5 groups. Group I as a negative control (CMC-Na), group II as a
positive control (glibenclamide 0,6 mg/kg), group III was given purple sweet
potato ethanolic extract at dose of 150 mg/kg, group IV was treated with ethanol
extract of purple sweet potato at dose of 300 mg/kg, and group V was treated with
ethanolic extract of purple sweet potato at dose of 600 mg/kg. The result showed
that ethanolic extract of purple sweet potato possess hypoglycemic activity.
Ethanolic extract of purple sweet potato at doses of 150 mg/kgBB and 300
mg/kgBB showed the strongest activity among three used doses, which are
equivalent to that of glibenclamid at dose of 0,6 mg/kgBB.
