Abstract
This research aim is comparing the writing and speaking ability of the
students who took “English club” extracurricular activity and those who did not
take “English club” extracurricular activity among the seventh grade students of
SMP Negeri 1 sampang, Kab. Cilacap in the academic year 2016/2017. The
design of this study is prospective causal-comparative study; finding the impact
by comparing two groups. The subject of this research were the students of the
seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sampang, Kab. Cilacap in the academic
year 2016/2017. 28 students who took “English club” extracurricular activity and
28 who did not take “English club” extracurricular activity were chosen as the
sample. The technique used for obtaining the data were writing test, speaking test,
and questionnaire.
The result of writing test conducted to both groups shows significant difference
with t-test 3.127; higher than the level of significant 2.005. and the speaking test
conducted to both groups show significant difference with t-test 4.575; higher than the
level of significant 2.005. the Mean difference of writing ability of both is 2.571 and the
Mean difference of speaking ability is 5.5357. Therefore, the researcher draws a
conclusion that there is a difference of writing and speaking ability between the
students who took “English club” extracurricular activity and those students who did
not take “English club” extracurricular activity. “English club” Extracurricular activity has
contribution toward writing and speaking ability. It means that “English club”
extracurricular activity has influence on writing and speaking ability among the seventh
grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sampang, Kab. Cilacap.
