Abstract

Gusti Allia Nabila Putri, 1909010024. 2023: Representation of Social Actors in
Criminal News Involving Under-Aged Children: An Application of Leeuwen’s
Discourse Strategy. Undergraduate Thesis for Sarjana Sastra Degree, English
Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences and Communication, University
Muhammadiyah Purwokerto.
This study aims to identify the strategies applied in online crime news, explain the
factors that influence the strategies taken by the criminal news media and explain
the impact of the strategy on the image of criminals. In conducting this study,
researcher used Van Leeuwen's (2008) Inclusion theory. This study uses a
qualitative description method, because the data used in this research is news text.
The source data used are news texts published by news media Tempo, Liputan6 and
KPAI which focus on the murder of underage children in Makassar. From the
research results, the researcher found six inclusion strategies, such as
Indetermination, Nomination, Functionalization, Identification, Assimilation and
Individualization. Factor that affects the strategies used by the media namely social
actors shown are not eliminated from the news text by the media to maintain the
identity of the social actors. The impact on the actor's image is not good. Because
the offender has a bad image, even though his actions are caused by parental
pressure.
