Abstract

The development of the heavy metal industry increases every year, causing
environmental pollution, one of which is Cu metal waste. One effort to deal with
pollution is with the adsorption method which uses hydrogel as an adsorbent. This
research aims to determine the effect of maleic anhydride on the characteristics and
level of absorption of Cu metal ions in hydrogels. Chitosan/PVA/Maleic Anhydride
hydrogel has been successfully made using the chemical crosslinking method. The
maleic anhydride concentration used is 0%; 1%; 2%; 3%; 4% and 5%. The
characteristics measured were gel fraction, swelling, and adsorption of Cu (II) metal
ions. The results of research on the gel fraction with the addition of maleic
anhydride showed a significantly different effect on the hydrogel. On swelling, the
addition of maleic anhydride showed a significant effect on the hydrogel. On the
adsorption percentage, the addition of maleic anhydride showed no significant effect.
The results showed that increasing the concentration of maleic anhydride increased
the adsorption capacity of the hydrogel towards Cu (II) metal ions, but also affected
the mechanical properties of the hydrogel such as brittleness and swelling ability.
The optimal concentration of maleic anhydride was obtained at a certain value,
which provided the best balance between adsorption capacity and physical stability
of the hydrogel.
