Abstract
Low carbon steel is the type of steel most commonly used in industry, one of which is ST 41 Steel which has a carbon content of 0.08% - 0.20% which is often used because of its relatively cheap cost and fairly good machining properties. However, the steel can experience a decrease in hardness strength and wear over time. So this research explores the effect of the heat treatment process using the Hardening method on ST 41 steel, holding time variations of 15, 30, 40 minutes, fast cooling using a salt water solution with the aim of increasing hardness and having fairly good wear resistance. The results of the research carried out show that the Hardening process significantly improves the mechanical properties in testing. The highest tensile strength value was achieved at 15 minutes of 510.05 MPa, while the tensile strength at 30 minutes was 475.36 MPa and the lowest at 40 minutes was 467.31 MPa. The hardness test showed an increase from 12.5 HRC (without heat treatment) to 27 HRC at 15 minutes, 28.5 HRC at 30 minutes and 28 HRC at 40 minutes. This wear test shows that ST 41 steel (without heat treatment) experienced a fairly high level of wear, namely 0.000189 mm³, so after this heat treatment process the best results were obtained at a holding time of 15 minutes with a value of 0.000163 mm³, 30 minutes 0, 000170 mm³ and 40 minutes 0.000176 mm³ From these results, it can be concluded that the Hardening process with variations in holding time with fast cooling using a salt water solution is effective in increasing the hardness, tensile strength and wear resistance of ST 41 low carbon steel.
