Abstract
Coping strategy is a behavior or process in which a person uses a way or method carried out by individuals to overcome and control situations or problems that are stressful, challenging, burdensome, and exceed their resources. Coping strategies aim to reduce or minimize the influence of stress and negative emotions generated by the situation. This coping strategy is reflected in the novel The Color Purple. This research aims to explore how Celie's coping strategies contribute to her survival and self-empowerment. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods because this research analyzes non-numerical data. This research uses coping strategy theory from Lazarus and Folkman and is supported by psychological theory from Sigmund Freud to analyze the strategies used based on Celie's psychological condition. In the form of struggle, Celie made three efforts, namely becoming bolder in action, more open in talking to friends for advice, and distracting herself with things she likes. The result of Celie's struggle is a change in herself to be more courageous, and strong in facing the perpetrators of her life difficulties. She became more confident and ready to enjoy her new life. The result is the coping strategies used by Celie can allow her to live a free life like other women and heal the trauma she experienced during her lifetime.
