Abstract

The increasing population leads to a rising demand for basic necessities. Urea is one of the most widely used synthetic nitrogen fertilizers for rice and corn crops in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the effect of synthetic polymer (PVA) and natural polymer (tapioca starch) coating concentrations. The variations of PVA and tapioca starch coating concentrations used in this study are 1%, 3%, 5%, 7%, and 9%. Urea release was analyzed using four kinetic models: zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer-Peppas. The obtained data were used to determine the coefficient of determination (R). The results of this study indicated that there are differences in the release patterns of nitrogen in Controlled Release Urea (CRU) fertilizers with PVA and tapioca starch coatings. The study also conducted tests for water absorption capacity, bulk density, SEM, and FTIR to determine the physical and chemical characteristics of the CRF urea fertilizer.
