Abstract

Background: Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) is widely
utilized across various industries, including aromatherapy, cosmetics, and
pharmaceuticals. Due to its high demand, it is often subject to adulteration with
substances such as palm oil and linalool. Therefore, a reliable authentication
method is necessary to ensure the purity of lavender essential oil. Methodology:
Lavender essential oil, along with adulterants (palm oil and linalool) and
commercial lavender oil, was analyzed using FTIR spectroscopy combined with
chemometric techniques, specifically PCA and PLS, to identify and distinguish
authentic lavender oil from adulterated samples. Results: FTIR spectroscopy
effectively revealed the spectral patterns of the analyzed samples. PCA successfully
differentiated pure lavender oil from adulterated palm oil and linalool samples. PLS
was utilized to validate the methodology employed in this study. Conclusion: when
combined with PCA and PLS analysis, FTIR spectroscopy has proven to be an
effective method for authenticating lavender essential oil and detecting adulteration.
This approach can be widely implemented in the industry to maintain product
quality and authenticity.
