Abstract

This study aimed to examine the perceptions of eighth-semester students at a private, Islamic-based university regarding using TED Talks in a Listening for Academic Purposes classroom. The participants were six English students at a state, islamic-based university. Using a qualitative phenomenological study design, this research employed transcribed semi-structured interviews analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings revealed that TED Talks positively impacted students’ listening skills due to its wide range of topics, dynamic format of presentation, informative and effective content. Students appreciated the advanced vocabulary, diverse academic disciplines, and engaging visuals, which helped them process and obtain information better. The variety of accents and clear audio quality further enhanced their listening experience. However, a student found the lengthy duration of TED Talks’s presentations to be less engaging and potentially affect his focus, leading to information overload and boredom. Additionally, visual element of angle shots was perceived as distracting. Despite these drawbacks, the overall perception of TED Talks as learning media in a listening for academic purposes was positive. The content’s informativeness and effectiveness were highlighted, with students resulting improvements in their listening skills, vocabulary, and comprehension.
