Abstract
Laboratory liquid waste contains many hazardous and toxic substances that can cause environmental damage. Therefore, it is necessary to treat laboratory liquid waste so that it can meet the quality standards according to the Regulation of the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia No. 5 of 2014. Laboratory liquid waste contains many kinds of heavy metals such as Pb and Cu, which are toxic to the environment. One method to treat liquid waste is electrocoagulation method. This study aims to determine the effect of plate width and electrocoagulation process time in reducing the heavy metal levels of Pb and Cu in chemical engineering laboratory liquid waste. The variables used are the width of the electrode plate of 8, 10, and 12 cm with a length of 5 cm, a thickness of 1 mm, and a distance between the electrodes of 5 cm. While the electrocoagulation time used was 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 minutes. Analysis of the initial heavy metal levels of Pb and Cu using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) gave results of 0.632 mg/L and 7.084 mg/L. Based on the research conducted, the best plate width for reducing Pb heavy metal levels is obtained on a plate of 8 cm. This result has met the quality standard which is 0.087 mg/L. While the results for Cu heavy metal did not meet the quality standards. The best electrocoagulation time for reducing heavy metal levels was obtained for Pb at 75 minutes, which was 0.8 mg/L and Cu metal at 30 minutes, which was 0.12 mg/L.
