Abstract

Purwokerto Timur Station was the first station in Purwokerto, opened in 1896, coinciding with the inauguration of the SDS Maos-Purwokerto tram line. In the 1980s, after the station was closed, freight trains operated several times a month, but they were limited to transporting fertilizer for PT Sriwijaya. The objectives of this research are (1) to reveal the history of Purwokerto Timur Station, (2) to analyze the benefits of Purwokerto Timur Station from 1980 to 2000, and (3) to examine the impact of Purwokerto Timur Station on the community, especially the residents of Kranji village. The research was conducted from November 2023 to June 2024 using historical research methods, which include four steps: (1) Heuristics, data collection techniques including observation, documents, and interviews; (2) Criticism, to test the authenticity of sources; (3) Interpretation, compiling historical facts, and (4) Historiography, the step of writing history.
The research findings include the utilization of Purwokerto Timur Station in Banyumas Regency from 1980 to 2000: (1) Purwokerto Timur Station was the first station in Purwokerto, opened in 1896, coinciding with the inauguration of the SDS Maos-Purwokerto tram line. In the past, Purwokerto Timur Station was widely used by people because it was an efficient mode of transportation. However, around 1980, the role of Purwokerto Timur Station was increasingly replaced by other means of transportation such as motorcycles, buses, and colts. (2) Purwokerto Timur Station was closed in the 1980s but was still used as a place for freight trains from the PUSRI factory. Additionally, the former Purwokerto Timur Station was used by traders in the East Station shopping complex to conduct business. (3) After Purwokerto Timur Station was closed, its land was used to expand the shopping complex, allowing many people, especially the residents of Kranji village, to set up shops in the Purwokerto Timur Station complex.
