The shortage of cooking oil in Indonesia in February 2022 became a widely
discussed topic. The author selected the online media outlets Kompas.com and
Radar Banyumas to examine how these two media sources reported on the
economic news related to the cooking oil shortage in Indonesia during February
2022. This study employs Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model,
divided into three parts: text, social context, and social cognition. The text analysis
examines how news about the cooking oil shortage is produced by the media and
their journalists at Kompas.com and Radar Banyumas. The social context analysis
explores how communication discourse is linked to societal conditions. The social
cognition analysis focuses on the mental awareness of news creators. The study
utilizes a qualitative approach to comprehensively understand the phenomena
within the research subject by describing the news in Kompas.com and Radar
Banyumas. The results indicate that both Kompas.com and Radar Banyumas focus
on the causes of the cooking oil shortage and the government's planned actions.
The news reporting from both media outlets is neutral, showing no bias towards
the government or the public. This is evident through the structure and neutral text
selection in their coverage.
