Abstract
This study aims to reveal: (1) the mode of cultural presentation presented
in Korean and Indonesian English textbooks; and (2) the elements of culture
presented in Korean and Indonesian English textbooks. This research is a
qualitative descriptive study with document analysis techniques. The subjects are
English textbooks entitled Middle School: English 3 published by 지학사
(Jihaksa Co., Ltd.) in which Min Chan-guy and 7 others compiled and designed,
English for Nusantara untuk SMP/MTs Kelas IX published by Pusat Perbukuan,
and the object is all the material related to the culture content in both textbooks.
The researcher used these English textbooks as the main data which focus on the
materials presented. The data were collected through document review. The data
collection instruments include the researcher as a human instrument assisted by
data cards and observation sheets. Thus, the only research instruments used in this
study were instruments for English textbooks from media of cultural information
presentation and elements of culture. The results of this study are as follows. (1)
The media of cultural information presentation in the EFL textbook Middle
School: English 3 and English for Nusantara untuk SMP/MTs Kelas IX reveals
that visual illustration is the most dominant and impactful medium. (2) The
elements of culture presented in the Korean English textbook included customs &
tradition (41%) most frequently expressed, and social organization (44%) in the
Indonesian English textbook. On the other hand, no mention of religion &
economic systems appears in Korean English textbooks, but only religion does not
appear in Indonesian English textbooks.
