Abstract

This research aims to uncover the history, socio-cultural conditions, and socio-cultural potentials in Merden Village, Purwanegara District. It was a qualitative research utilizing the historical method. The method includedheuristic, source criticism divided into external and internal criticism, interpretation, and historiography, involving critical examination and evaluation of documents abd artifacts from the past to understand past events and create a creative depiction of the past. The findings of this research indicate that Merden Village hasa history dating back to the Wirasaba State, Adipati Wargo Utomo. The name Merden began to gain recognition during the reign of adipati Anom Ngabei Wiro Kusumo, attracting visitors from various regions. The estabiishment of Merden made Raden Sutawijaya managethe state. Its territory comprised the district of Klampok, Mandiraja, and Purwanegara. This area wasbordered by the Serayu River to the north and mountains to the south, serving as a boundary between the regencies of Gombong and Kebumen. The formation of Merden Village has a significant impact on socio-cultural aspects. Social aspects evolve within the economy and educational tourism, leading to the creation of industries such as batik, kundi (a traditional musical instrument), blacksmithing, and the estabilishment of the Setu Market. The potential for religious cultural tourism isalso notable, with traditions like the earth offering ceremony (sedekahbumi), communal feasts (slametan), and sveral historical sites such as shrines and heritahe sites that are still preserved today.
