Abstract

One of the crucial factors in cultivating corn is fertilization and the use of fertile soil. Farmers tend to use inorganic fertilizers to increase their agricultural yields. A solution to overcome excessive use of inorganic fertilizers is by using biochar as a soil conditioner and vermicompost as organic fertilizer. The aim of this research is to determine the effects of coconut shell biochar and vermicompost fertilizer on the growth and yield of corn plants. The study was conducted from August to December 2023 in the experimental field of the Faculty of Agriculture and Fisheries, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. The method used was a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) consisting of two factors. The first factor was the dosage of coconut shell biochar consisting of B0 = 0 t/ha, B1 = 15 t/ha, B2 = 25 t/ha, B3 = 25 t/ha, B4 = and 35 t/ha. The second factor was the dosage of vermicompost consisting of V0 = 0 t/ha, V1 = 20 t/ha, and V2 = 40 t/ha. The observation data were analyzed using ANOVA, and if significant results were obtained, further tests were conducted using the DMRT test at a significance level of 5%. The observation results of the biochar application dosage showed an influence on stem diameter and root volume, while the vermicompost dosage showed an influence on the number of leaves, leaf area, stem diameter, ear weight with husk, and plant root volume. The interaction between coconut shell biochar dosage and vermicompost fertilizer did not show any significant effect on all observed variables
