Abstract

Fahlevi, Hafidz, 1909010045. 2024: Philip Roth‘s The Human Stain: A
Psychological Analysis of the Human Needs. Undergraduate thesis for Sarjana
Sastra Degree, English Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences and
Communication, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto.
This thesis delves into the complex elements of Philip Roth's novel, "The Human
Stain," with a primary focus on unraveling the complexities of its central
character, Coleman Silk. Employing Abraham Maslow's Human Motivation
Theory as a lens, the research aims to dissect Coleman's personality and narrative
speech, investigating the underlying psychological motivations that shape his
behavior.
The study draws upon a comprehensive literature review to establish the
theoretical framework and utilizes a qualitative research approach to delve into the
nuances of Coleman's character. The findings underscore the profound impact of
social-cultural contexts prevalent during the time depicted in the novel,
particularly in relation to racism.
Regarding his albino condition, Coleman Silk is financially well-established,
however, he experiences challenges in satisfying needs at different levels of
Maslow's hierarchy. His physical needs for shelter, food, and clothing are met,
and he enjoys a stable family life with a wife and four children who are selfsufficient.
However, his need for security takes a hit when he is accused of racism
due to an unintentional remark. This accusation leads to his resignation from his
academic position and a loss of personal security. Moreover, this thesis discusses
about the concept of albinism, where the individual adapts to the norms of society
in order to be accepted. Coleman's choice to be identified as a Jews in a racially
stratified society is a manifestation of his albinism, getting his security and a sense
of love and belonging met by the assumptions of people around him who are
mistaken about his racial identity.
