Abstract
This research examines spelling errors in observation report texts of Grade VIII G
students at SMP Negeri 2 Sokaraja. The study aimed to describe the forms of spelling
errors in observation report texts of Grade VIII G students at SMP Negeri 2 Sokaraja
and to depict the implementation of spelling errors in Indonesian language learning.
The research design employed was qualitative descriptive. The data for this study
consisted of sentences containing spelling errors in observation report texts of Grade
VIII G students at SMP Negeri 2 Sokaraja. The data source was the observation
report texts written by 33 students of Grade VIII G at SMP Negeri 2 Sokaraja. The
methods and techniques involved three stages: data collection, data analysis, and
presentation of the results. The data collection stage utilized the observation method
with the basic note-taking technique. The data analysis stage employed the
distributional method with the substitution technique. The presentation of the analysis
results was conducted using an informal method. The research findings revealed a
total of 293 spelling errors, comprising: (1) capitalization errors (37 instances), (2)
non-capitalization errors (124 instances), (3) italicization errors (5 instances), (4)
affixed word errors (24 instances), (5) bound form errors (2 instances), (6) compound
word errors (2 instances), (7) preposition errors (29 instances), (8) abbreviation and
acronym errors (4 instances), (9) numeral and number errors (15 instances), (10)
pronoun errors (2 instances), (11) period errors (24 instances), (12) comma errors (17
instances), and (13) hyphen errors (9 instances). Based on the data discovered, it is
evident that spelling errors frequently occur in students' writing activities.
