Abstract
The "Merdeka Belajar/Freedom to Learn" curriculum is a new policy introduced
by the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemedikbud Ristek) and was officially
launched in 2022, replacing the previous curriculum known as the 2013
curriculum. However, some educational institutions have already adopted the
"Merdeka Belajar" curriculum in 2021 as part of the school empowerment
program, one of which is SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Purbalingga. This study aims to
uncover the changes from the 2013 curriculum to the "Merdeka Belajar"
curriculum in the history subject, the implementation of the "Merdeka Belajar"
curriculum in the history subject at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Purbalingga, the
challenges faced by history teachers in implementing the "Merdeka Belajar"
curriculum, and the solutions they have employed. This research employed a
qualitative method with observation, interviews, and document analysis as data
collection techniques. The results of this study reveal that the changes from the
2013 curriculum to the "Merdeka Belajar" curriculum are evident in the curriculum
structure, teaching and assessment processes, teaching models, and the presence
of the P5 approach. Secondly, the implementation of the "Merdeka Belajar"
curriculum in the history subject adopts the project-based learning model, shifting
the focus of learning onto the students, with the teacher playing the role of a
facilitator. The history subject receives 54 credit hours per year, adjusted for the
allocation of P5 activities. Lastly, challenges include varying levels of teacher
understanding about the "Merdeka Belajar" curriculum and learning loss due to
the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these challenges can be overcome through
teacher workshops, Subject Teacher Deliberations, and building closer
relationships between teachers and students.
