Abstract

Batik is one of Indonesia's cultural heritages originating from various
regions, including Gumelem in Banjarnegara. Batik serves as Indonesia's identity
and a unifying element of cultural diversity. Batik in Gumelem emerged from the
cultural influences brought by representatives of the Surakarta Palace during the
era of the "kademangan" system. Batik-making is deeply intertwined with social
values like cooperation and togetherness. This research aims to provide an
overview of the general features, motifs, and meanings of Gumelem batik, as well
as to comprehend the influence of batik on the social and cultural life of the
community in Gumelem village, Susukan Sub-district, Banjarnegara Regency, from
2016 to 2022. The research employs historical methods encompassing heuristic,
criticism, nterpretation, and historiography stages. The findings indicate that
cultural aspects like traditional clothing regulated by "demang" (local leader)
include the usage of batik fabric and the community is trained in batik-making
through education. Analyzing the pattern structures and motif elements that
constitute batik, it's evident that symbolic meanings are embedded, even though
many patterns are rooted in Solo culture. The presence of distinctive Gumelem batik
in Banjarnegara Regency fluences the social aspect through education, batik
awareness, training, and the community's culture reflected in events like
"Ujungan," "Sadran Gedhe," and "Jamasan."
