Abstract

The presence of heavy metals has toxic properties even at low concentrations. Hydrogel has a three-dimensional porous structure with a chemically responsive group function that enables the capture of metal ions from wastewater. Chitosan/PVA/Guar Gum hydrogel has been successfully prepared by the chemical crosslinking method. The concentration of Guar Gum used was 0 to 1 gram. The characteristics measured were gel fraction, swelling ratio and adsorption of Fe metal ions. The results showed that the value of the gel fraction increased with the addition of Guar Gum, the value of the gel fraction obtained ranged from 0% -78.01%, and the best was the addition of 0.8 gram of Guar Gum concentration with a gel fraction value of 78.01%. The swelling ratio value decreased with increasing concentration of Guar Gum. The percentage of Fe (III) metal ion adsorption on the Chitosan/PVA/Guar Gum hydrogel obtained has varied results. The addition of Guar Gum reduced chitosan's effectiveness in absorbing Fe metal ions. The results of this study indicate that adding Guar Gum can increase and decrease the characteristics of hydrogels and can be applied for the adsorption of metal ions
