Abstract
Translation is the process of transferring the meaning from the source language to
the target language. In translation, subtitling strategies are used by translators to
translate words, phrases, or utterances in audiovisuals. This research discusses the
translation strategy and Equivalence of subtitles in "Luca" movie. The analysis of
translation strategies is needed to find out the types of subtitling translation
strategies used in the movie with the analysis theory of Gottlieb (1992) in Sugeng
Hariyanto (2005). Meanwhile, equivalence in translation uses the theory of Nida
and Taber (1982) to find out how the strategies create meaning equivalency in the
target language. The method is mixed with observation data collection techniques
and document analysis. As a result of this research subtitling strategies used by the
translator in "Luca" movie are expansion, paraphrase, transfer, transcription,
condensation, decimation, imitation, deletion, resignation, and taming. From the
movie subtitle, the total data is 401, based on the results of each strategy, it can be
concluded that the most widely used subtitling strategies in this translation are
transfer strategies. There are three kinds of equivalence in this study, namely formal,
dynamic, and non-equivalence, where subtitling strategies of transfer, and imitation
are categorized as formal equivalence, then paraphrase, condensation, expansion,
deletion, decimation, transcription, and taming are categorized as dynamic
equivalence, and in this translation, there are also non-equivalent subtitling
strategies, namely resignation. Where the translator cannot find the equivalence to
translate the word from the source language to the target language.
