Abstract

This study aims to explore and describe the specific vocabulary and functions of
the register within volleyball. It employs a qualitative descriptive approach
grounded in sociolinguistic methodologies. Ihe research data are derived from
both oral and written sources. The oral data encompass utterances, highlighting
specific volleyball terms and registers used by players, coaches, referees, and
supporters on the volleyball court. ln contrast, the written data are derived from
transcend conversation these participants, emphasizing similar terms and
registers. Data collection was conducted via observation, primarily utilizing the
eavesdropping technique, and was supplemented by recording, note-taking, and
literature review methods. The data analysis integrated contextual and
referential alignment strategies, and findings were presented in an informal
format. The findings of this study are:(1) There are eight specific terms, mainly
derived from English, used in volleyball. These include (1) player positions, (2)
terminologies, (3,) types of shots and defenses, (4) types of violations, (5)
equipment and venues, (6) scoring (7) language signs, and (8) body language.
All these terms have been agreed upon for use within the scope of volleyball. (2)
In this research, three distinct linguistic register functions were identified: the
phatic, emotive, and conative functions.
