Abstract

This study aims to (1) determine students skills in writing poetry, (2) find out the challenges experienced by students in writing poetry, (3) find out how teachers equip and help students in writing poetry. This type of research is qualitative. The data were obtained in February 2021 at SD Negeri 4 Sokanegara. The participants in this study were classroom teachers, parents, and ftfth-grade students. Data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, and document analysis. Data analysis was carried out through the process of data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and verification by the Miles and Huberman model. The research uses technical triangulation and source triangulation to measure the validity of the data. The results showed that students' ability to write poetry varied greatly, there were four categories of poetry based on the number of stanzas, including 2 stanzas, 3 stanzas, 4 stanzas, and 5 stanzas. Judging from the intrinsic element, the title and content of most of the poems were appropriate. Some students could also create arrays or lines with beautiful and standard words with rhymes. Stanzas in poetry were also interrelated and contained meaning with the imagination of most students quite impressive. The challenges experienced by students were selecting the right words and compiling sentences to fit and interrelate in the stanzas. The teacher provided students with material on the meaning of poetry, the character of children's poetry, elements of poetry, poetry writing techniques, and the benefits of poetry. The teacher also helped students with examples of poetry and a collection of diction and directs students to recall previous experiences in writing poetry based on what students think, see, and feel.
