Abstract
In general, shellfish processing activities produce shells as solid waste.
Local residents of Bulupayung village, Cilacap district, used to dump the
mangrove clamshell ( Geloina sp.) around the riverbanks. This causes scattered
and accumulated shells waste around the banks of the Serayu River. Shells waste
can be processed into ingredient in producing nanocalcium. Currently,
nanocalcium is widely applied to harden and also to prevent teeth calcification, so
it is necessary to study the production of nanocalcium. This study aims to
determine the nanocalcimn content and characteristics of the mangrove clamshells
(Geloina sp.). The procedure of this study consisted of sample collection of
mangrove clamshell ( Geloina sp. ), sample preparation and nanocalcimn
production, yield calculation, content and characteristics analysis of the
nanocalcium. Nanocalcimn production was carried out using the top-down
method followed by the precipitation method. Nanocalcium content and
characteristics were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS)
and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that mangrove
clamshells nanocalcimn (Geloina sp.) has low calcium content (47.946%). The
method of making mangrove clamshells nanocalcimn (Geloina sp.) with top-down
and precipitation methods has been shown to produce nanocalcium with a high
yield (41.36%), has a nanometer size (116-332 run) and has round shape (vaterite
calcium).
